JOSHNA

MUTHUKUMAR

Joshna Muthukumar is a cinematographer who recently earned her MFA in Film and Television Production from Loyola Marymount University, with a concentration in cinematography. Her work is driven by a deep sensitivity to visual storytelling and a commitment to crafting images that are emotionally resonant and intentional.
Before discovering her passion for filmmaking, Joshna cultivated a multidisciplinary foundation as a freelance videographer, graphic designer, and video editor. Working closely with brands, artists, and small businesses, she developed a sharp eye for detail, composition, and color. These early experiences taught her how to communicate ideas visually and how to create compelling narratives even within the confines of commercial and digital formats. Over time, this translated into a growing desire to explore more cinematic forms of expression.
Over the years, she honed her craft through a combination of rigorous training and hands-on production work, serving in key roles on a wide range of projects from short films to studio documentaries. Her graduate thesis project, which explored themes of intimacy, identity, and vulnerability, marked a turning point in her visual voice: minimalistic yet emotionally rich, grounded in soft camera movement and warm, atmospheric lighting.
Influenced by painters and avant-garde photographers, Joshna’s visual style is marked by a deep curiosity about light and how it interacts with space, skin, and emotion. She approaches each project with the belief that the camera is not just a tool, but a presence that must listen, feel, and respond.
Conrad Hall once said,
“Cinematography is infinite in its possibilities… much more so than music or language.” Through the lens, Joshna strives not just to show what is seen, but to reveal what is felt, to create images that linger long after the screen goes dark.
